What Should a Church Be About?

That’s a question I’ve been asking myself for years. There are plenty of good answers. Some say the church should be about evangelism—telling people about Jesus. Others emphasize discipleship—helping believers follow Him day by day. Some would highlight worship, lifting our voices and hearts in praise to God. Still others would focus on community, service, counseling, missions, or family life. Truth is, there are many good things a church could be about, and I’m sure you could think of a few more yourself.

But here at Elk Community Church, we’ve worked hard to answer this question for our congregation, in this time and place. According to the Scriptures, what has God called us to be about right here and right now?

Here’s the answer we’ve adopted as our mission:

We exist to glorify Christ as we gather and grow in the gospel.

That’s not just a catchy line—it defines our purpose. It describes what we value, and it gives us direction. The good news of Jesus is what brought us together in the first place, and it’s the gospel that fuels our growth and keeps us focused on Him.

Why glorify Christ? Because Jesus means everything to us. The statement doesn’t just say He is the Christ—the Messiah, the King—it declares that our very reason for being is to glorify Him as such. Now, glorifying Christ doesn’t mean making Him look better than He really is, as though He needed help with that. Instead, it means recognizing, reflecting, and rejoicing in His majesty, His sufficiency, His perfection, His excellence. In short, we want to make much of Jesus—because He is infinitely worthy of it.
